How to set up IMAP email in Outlook Mobile

This guide takes you step-by-step through the process of setting up a new IMAP email account in the Outlook Mobile app on Android or iOS phones.

If you don’t have the app, get it here:

Step 1: Open the app

  1. Launch the Outlook app on your mobile phone

  2. If this is the first account to be set up, skip to step 2.

  3. If you have other accounts set up, then you need to access the Add Account menu:
     
  • Select your profile icon to access the menu, then select the Settings icon (gear icon), then click Add Email Account

Step 2: Select IMAP

  1. An Add Account screen will appear. Enter your email address and select Continue.

  2. A popup to select IMAP or Pop3 will appear. Select IMAP.

  3. A popup to select IMAP Direct or IMAP Cloudcache will appear. Select IMAP Direct.

  4. If the popups appeared, you can skip to Step 4. If not, continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Add Account Manually

  1. Select “Set Up Account Manually” if this option displays.

2. Select IMAP under the Advanced setting  

Note: If the setup goes straight to setup an ‘exchange’ mailbox (says “Connect Exchange” at the top), click on the small question mark at the top and change it to “connect IMAP”.

Step 4: Add Basic Settings

1. Enter your email settings.

  • Email address – type in your full email address (in lowercase)
  • Password – The password for your account
  • Display name – Your full name (e.g. John Smith) It will display on all outgoing emails.
  • Description – i.e. Work

2. Click the tick mark [top right corner] to accept the settings.

3. If your mailbox is now added, skip to Step 6. If not, do step 5.

Step 5: Add Advanced Settings

  1. Click the switch button [bottom right corner] to turn on Advanced Settings

  2. Enter the email settings as provided by your service provider. 

IMAP Incoming Email Server

  • IMAP Host Name – e.g. mail.yourdomain.co.za
  • Security Type: Choose SSL/TLS
  • Port number is 993
  • IMAP Username is the full email address
  • IMAP Password is the mailbox password

SMTP Outgoing Email Server

  • SMTP Host Name – e.g. mail.yourdomain.co.za
  • Security Type: Choose SSL/TLS
  • Port number is 465
  • SMTP Username is the full email address (same as IMAP)
  • SMTP Password is the mailbox password (same as IMAP)

3. Select the tick mark [top right corner] and the app will attempt to log in

Step 6: Finish (or Add Another)

  1. The next screen will confirm that the email account has been added successfully.

  2. If you would like to add another email account, select Add. If not, select Maybe later.
